November 2017: Oksana

Rosa Oksana was bred by Steve Singer and introduced in the United States in 2001. This lovely hybrid tea rose blooms on a medium size bush with good repeat during the growing season and each sweetly perfumed flower opens to reveal lovely quilled petals flushed in pink with yellow undertones. A cross between Great Scott x Lanvin, this beauty proves to be a great garden rose with show table possibilities.

Oksana Baiul, for whom this rose was named, was born in the Ukraine on November 16, 1977. She gained fame in 1994, at the age of 16, when she won the gold medal in figure skating for the Ukraine, the second youngest figure skater in history at that time to win the gold. She fell in love with skating at the age of four and began winning competitions at the age of 7. Orphaned at the age of 13, she moved in with her skating coach who became her surrogate mother until Oksana moved to the United States shortly after her Olympic win. She continues to skate in professional ice shows, has written two books, and has launched her own line of skating apparel.

October 2017: Pope John Paul II

Rosa Pope John Paul II was hybridized by Dr. Keith W. Zary and later introduced in the U.S. by Jackson Perkins in 2006. This luminous, pure white, hybrid tea blooms in profusion atop long straight stems of an upright bush. A cross between Secret x French Lace, this beauty is a winner in the garden as well as on the show table. Its high centered, perfectly formed flowers are so fragrant one bloom will fill a room with perfume. Heat tolerant and disease resistant, this stunning rose is a must have for any garden!

This rose was chosen for October’s Rose of Month to honor the late Pope John Paul II who began his papacy on October 16, 1978. Pope John Paul II made history by becoming the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. He was a vocal advocate for human rights and used his influence to bring about political change, often credited with the fall of communism in his native Poland. Noted as the most traveled pope in history, John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84. He was canonized a saint by Pope Francis in 2014.

September 2017: Firefighter

Rosa Firefighter was hybridized by Joseph Orard of France before the year 1998 and introduced in the U.S. by Edmunds Roses in 2005. This beautiful crimson red hybrid tea prolifically produces high centered, well-formed flowers on long straight stems on a tall growing bush. The blooms are extremely fragrant, exuding hints of old rose and raspberry that will fill a room with heavenly perfume. A cross between the roses Lasting Love x Hidalgo, this stunning specimen is a winner in the garden as well as on the show table.

Rosa Firefighter was chosen as September’s Rose of the Month after being named for the Firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. 343 Firefighters died while trying to save the lives of others during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City that day. They are among the many of the real heroes who stepped up to protect our country on that fateful day.

August 2017: Diana, Princess of Wales

Rosa Diana, Princess of Wales wad bred by Dr. Keith W. Zary before 1998 and later introduced in the U.S. by Bear Creek Gardens, Inc. in 1999. Unveiled at a ceremonial planting at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. in 1998, this elegant hybrid tea rose is creamy white suffused with shades of pink and salmon. A cross between Rosas Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Sheer Elegance, this lovely specimen is classically formed, sweetly fragrant, and makes a statement on the show table and in the garden.

This stunning rose was chosen as the rose of the month for August to honor Diana Spencer, the princess of Wales, who tragically lost her life at the age of 36 on August 31, 1997 in a devastating car crash in Paris, France. Although her marriage (and later divorce) to Prince Charles of England caused her a great deal of stress, her two boys brought her the greatest of joy. She became the people’s princess, loved around the world for beauty and charm and her compassion for others. Her overall effect on charity is probably more significant than any other person’s in the 20^th century.

July 2017: Let Freedom Ring

Rosa Let Freedom Ring was the creation of WWII Veteran and amateur hybridizer Ernest Earman of Virginia in 2004. Later introduced in the United States by Weeks Wholesale Rose Growers, Inc. in 2006, this stunning medium red hybrid tea has proven to be a trophy stealer in the rose show arena. A cross between Prima Donna and Touch of Class, this beauty grows on long stems; each bloom consistently opening to reveal a rose of perfect exhibition form. Position this lovely specimen at the back of the garden as she will grow to be a tall bush.

Let Freedom Ring was chosen as July’s Rose of the Month in honor of Independence Day as we celebrate the many freedoms bestowed upon as a nation and as individuals of this great country that so many have fought and died for.

June 2017: Marilyn Monroe

Rosa Marilyn Monroe was hybridized by Tom Carruth in 2002 and is a stunning rose. This creamy apricot hybrid tea with a light green wash over its outer petals is the offspring of Sunset Celebration and St. Patrick, two other outstanding garden and exhibition varieties. Marilyn performs well in warm climates, is slightly fragrant, and grows into a slightly spreading bush with very thorny canes. But don’t let the thorns keep you from growing this rose; it is a real beauty and the winner of many show table awards.

Rosa Marilyn Monroe was chosen as the Rose of the Month for June in honor of the American actress Marilyn Monroe who was born on June 1, 1926 as Norma Jean Mortenson. Beginning her career as a model, she moved into acting and was famous for playing comic “dumb blond” characters and becoming one the most popular sex symbols of the 1950’s. Leading an unstable and tumultuous personal life she was married and divorced three times before her untimely death at the age of 36 from an overdose of barbiturates. Although she died too young, she remains one of the most well known and loved cultural icons of our time.

May 2017: Memorial Day

Rosa Memorial Day was hybridized by Tom Carruth in 2001 and then introduced in the United States in 2004 by Weeks Wholesale Roses. The blooms of this lovely high centered hybrid tea rose open to reveal flowers with ruffled, medium pink petals. Growing atop long stems on a large, spreading bush, you will need to make plenty of room in your garden for this rose as it can grow quite vigorously. As a cross between Blueberry Hill and New Zealand you will love its sweet fragrance.

This rose was chosen as May’s rose of the month for its name, Memorial Day, a holiday we celebrate on the last Monday of the month to remember those people who have lost their lives while serving in our armed forces. The significance of Memorial Day is often confused with that of Veterans’ Day, a day when we honor all individuals (dead or alive) who have served in our military.

April 2017: Out of Africa

Rosa Out of Africa, classified as an orange blend, was hybridized by W. Kordes & Sons of Germany in 1997. Reminiscent of an African sunset, this beautiful exhibition rose grows atop tall stems on a rather spreading bush. Its flowers are mildly fragrant and the plant blooms often.

This variety was chosen as April’s Rose of the Month to honor Karen Blixen who was born on April 17, 1885. Taking the pen name Isak Dinesen, this Danish author is best known for her memoir entitled Out of Africa; an account of her life while living in Kenya, Africa on a coffee plantation. Her work was eventually turned into an Academy Award winning motion picture starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep playing the role of Karen.

March 2017: St. Patrick

Rosa St. Patrick was hybridized by Frank A. Strickland in 1986 and then introduced in the U.S. by Weeks Wholesale Rose Growers in 1996. This slightly fragrant hybrid tea was the recipient of the AARS award in 1996 for its outstanding performance in the garden. Growing on a medium size bush, each high centered bloom opens to reveal an exhibition rose of buttery yellow, its outer petals displaying a hint of green. This variety, a cross between Brandy and Gold Medal, is heat tolerant and its blooms will last for days in the garden or in a vase. A must have rose for outdoor display or the show table; you can’t go wrong if yellow is your color.

This rose was chosen for our March Rose of the Month as we celebrate St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, on March 17^th. St. Patrick, who was born in England was kidnapped from his family estate as a boy and taken to Ireland where he was enslaved as a shepherd boy.

February 2017: Falling in Love

Rosa Falling in Love was hybridized by Tom Carruth in 2006 and introduced into the U.S. by Weeks Wholesale Rose Growers in 2007. This mildly fragrant hybrid tea produces sensuous blooms of warm pink on porcelain white that begin with high centers and open into saucer sized cupped flowers. As a seedling of Moonstone and Marilyn Monroe, its growth habit appears upright on a slightly spreading bush with monstrous thorns similar to its pollen parent, Marilyn Monroe. Thorns aside, it is a stunning specimen in the garden as well as a front runner on the show table; a must-have addition to any rose garden.

Chosen as February’s Rose of the Month in honor of Valentines’ Day, a day for lovers, this rose will have you falling in love with it every time you see it.
